Rebecca Dianne Moore

These are words I was blessed to speak at Rebecca's service today:

When I think of my friend, Rebecca, I see her framed in the word mercy.  These past few days I’ve listened to others describe her kindness, gentleness, Sally used the word “purity”. We all could describe Rebecca with terms of goodness.

I believe that every encounter any of you had with her – you left feeling affirmed and encouraged.

In the hours after we got news that she had taken ill –I asked several of my friends to be in prayer – One of them prayed “LORD have mercy”.

Scripture says – blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy –”

Mercy has been a term that has resonated with me during this whole time –

Early in our friendship I realized Rebecca had a unique gift of mercy .

And Rebecca modeled Mercy for each of us.  Her gentleness, humor and humility caused each of us to be drawn to her. Rebecca was FUN!

I think she would be uncomfortable with all the accolades –

our love for her has brought us all together.

 Rebecca loved get togethers –

She told me the other day that the 4th of July family get together was her thing!

She served – she cared- When I was in chemo seven years ago – Terry would take me to treatments and then need to go teach his university class – Rebecca would pick me up and we would go to lunch.  I was high on steroids and we’d lunch, laugh and shop.  She was there to help.  Often she brought food to cover our needs for that time 24 hours later when I would crash from treatments.  Rebecca helped to  make sense of the health challenges Terry and I have faced.

Rebecca and I would get together every summer before I returned to teaching and catch up.  With CoVid – we let too much time slip by and three weeks ago today we had a chance to catch up once more.

I see that as a God gift for me.

Our lunches always lasted at least 3 hours and the restaurant staff would be ready to kick us out. It took that long for us to catch up.

We didn’t take selfies of our lunches – just two grannies sharing pictures and stories of our kids and grands.  .  She loved you so . . . all of you.  Canton, Eloise, Oxley and Edison – your Mimi loved any time she could be with you.

Family was the focus of our conversations. I came to know so many of you through our time together over these past 12 -15 years. Rebecca was proud of you – so proud.

In our last texts two weeks ago, I was able to tell her once again of my respect for her and further tell her that “she breathed life into her family”.

That LIFE drew her family together and – supported them in tough times and ministered to you boys and to Paul.

And I see traits of her’s  in you men

--Ryan – the guardian looking after dad

– Tyler – taking care of details – looking after all the guests at the hospital to take that off his dad –

and Adam that effervescient spark of Rebecca’s – reminding us to stay strong.

She breathed life --

Rebecca loved growing things – plants, flowers, people.

We had to delay our lunch the other day because she was catching the cooler air to work in the yard.  I could understand fully since we shared a love of gardening.

Rebecca loved God and His creation -

As she breathes life into you now – she would want you to know

1.       Even in this hard time – God can be trusted.  For what we don’t understand – the why of all this – HE can be trusted and HE WILL CARRY YOU THROUGH THESE HARD, HARD TIMES.  He didn’t answer our prayers in the way we asked . that’s the 800 # Elephant in the room.

But HE is with us now – getting us through.  He’s the God of carrying grace – or MERCY.  2 Corinthians 1 calls Him - the God of compassion.  He feels your pain and cares.

This mercy passage has always been important to me:

Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings.  Psalm 57:1

2.      SHE WOULD TELL YOU TO STICK TOGETHER – People would love to be a part of what you all have as a family. This is a tight-knit family.  You all have lived close enough to BE THERE for each other – we in the Bell family often envied your big clan!

I LOVE Col. 1:17 – He is before all things and in HIM all things hold together.  Jesus is there for when you feel as if your world is coming apart. We talked about all the hard times that have come to your family during CoVid.   Your worlds have been rocked many times in recent months and the God of carrying grace – mercy has brought you through.  HE will do it again.

3.      She would tell you to be kind – to affirm others and one another.

In this changing culture we live in just now, it can be hard to see goodness. It’s not often we see kindness and we long for people to give us grace.  All of these things are in short supply in our world.  These are characteristics that most exemplify Jesus.  Rebecca demonstrated those qualities most characteristic of Christ.

As we were wrapping up our time together . . .

She expressed a concern that the political climate in today’s culture was dividing friends - even in Churches.  Rebecca practiced loving first and giving the benefit of the doubt –a person of PEACE. . . giving mercy

Hebrews 11 recounts the stories of the heroes of the faith– and goes on to say they did not receive all they were waiting for but looked forward to the promise that was coming. .  . Hebrews 12 calls these heroes of the faith a large cloud of witnesses.

Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus

Rebecca the affirmer – the encourager – your biggest cheerleader

Is part of that heavenly crowd – cheering you on.

She breathed life into me as well – that’s what mercy does.

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants.  What is painful here is precious in Heaven.  Some day we will understand - but for now we lean in to the God of compassion.

Legacy - Passing it On

I have loved the scripture passages that talk about generations . . .

I have been blessed with generations of my family who were strong Christ followers.  Their decisions to follow Christ changed the course of my life as well as my brothers.

My maternal grandparents:  Verner and Ida Brian*

My dad and mom were house-bound the last 15 years of their lives and couldn't keep up with growing grandchildren's activities.  Since we three kids lived in other places. they could not travel there easily. They saw it as their privilige to pray each day for their Grands by name.  .   .  all six of them.  They would be thrilled to see how God has answered those prayers.

In mom's last days she would look at the pictures of her wonderful six and say she had soooo much pride in her about the young people they were becoming and she wondered if that was sinning.

My Paternal Grandparents Hazel and Bill Neese**

I decided to create legacy pillows for our Grands from a quilt my parents inherited from my paternal grandparents.  .   . to remind them that long before they were born their great grandparents whom they had never met were praying for their momma (Bethany) or daddy (Marshall) and their future husband (Mat) or wife (Katie). Those prayers resulted in the blessing of the families they are now a part of.

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandment
Deut 7:9

My grandparents were all in Heaven by my 10th birthday.  But these are the stories I remember.
* I love the story of my Grandfather Brian taking his family to Church during the Depression.  He had only two quarters in his pocket for his family to live on.  My mother said - he put one in the collection basket that particular Sunday.  He and my mother often would take care of Grandma Brian as she would be very ill during the fall pollen times.  Mom at 3 years of age would stand on a box at the sink and wash dishes and she remembers her dad would make the homemade bread when grandma was unable.  A few years before she died, they moved 7 miles away from that home and she was never sick again.  She died in her mid 50's from a heart attack.
** Grandma Neese was known for her wonderful angel food cakes with this wonderful cooked icing.  One time she had to go to the hospital and she made two angel food cakes and took them to the hospital for her kids when they would come to visit her.  Often she would start the songs at Sunday morning church from the 2nd row.  On Nov. 1, 1959 she had all her family in and that Sunday morning, suffered a heart attack in Church.  She was rushed to the hospital an hour away and died later that afternoon  Grandpa Neese died 3 months later.

Freedom --

All summer our Church has been going through the book of Romans --  It's deep and we leave each Sunday challenged to think it through and re-examine.

After a thorough study of the doom loop in Romans 7 and the battle of spirit and flesh in the earlier chapters -- I admit I was eager to get to the passage in Romans 8:1 - -"there is NO Condemnation for those in Christ -- whew!

Diving deep into Romans 8 in worship today -- I couldn't help but be moved by the songs - before the message we sang,

So Will I --  if the stars were made to worship -- so will I!!! --

What was discovered just now -- Our Creator God put in place way back there on the 4th day of creation.

With this week's new telescope discovery of galaxies and stars just now seen -- it reminded me that

The moon and the stars govern the night and HIS LOVE ENDURES FOREVER.  PSA. 137
"God determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name"  Psa. 147

The sermon from Romans 8 reminded us that in Jesus -- we are free and have no doubt of what lies ahead for us. It concluded with the song "The Goodness of God"

Nobody can belt it out like CeCe Winans - I tried to link it and couldn't-- however the words relay what is in my heart -- the message of how very faithful my God has been in my life and it is the heart song of what God has done for me.  I got weepy as we sang!!!!

The Goodness of God

I love You, Lord
For Your mercy never fails me
All my days, I've been held in Your hands
From the moment that I wake up
Until I lay my head
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God
And all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God
I love Your voice
You have led me through the fire
In the darkest night
You are close like no other
I've known You as a Father
I've known You as a Friend
And I have lived in the goodness of God (yeah)
chorus
'Cause Your goodness is running after
It's running after me
Your goodness is running after
It's running after me
With my life laid down
I'm surrendered now
I give You everything
'Cause Your goodness is running after
It's running after me (oh-oh)
. . . . singin' it twice
chorus

It once again reminded me how very gracious our God has been to me.
Gracing me with the gift of my husband, giving us two beautiful children, Bethany and Marshall after we fought the infertility battle, bringing in two children-in-love as the mates to our kids - Mat and Katie
and further gifting us with 6 wonderful grands, Campbell, Sydney, Jack, Clara, Charlie and Calvin

He has guided and taught us as we worked in churches at home and on mission trips.  .  . showing us His goodness in the people He gave us to serve.
Modeling for us as Master Teacher as He put us each in various classrooms and workshops we held.

He has lovingly cared for us through illnesses and bound up our broken hearts during major losses.

My sister friend, Marinelle stitched my life verse for me from Psalm 16 for my retirement:

The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places -- surely I have a delightful inheritance.

Happy Heavenly Birthday, Mom

Today, Mom, marks your 19th Heavenly Birthday.  103 years old by earth counting if you were still with us.

You used to talk about the home God had prepared for you in Heaven.

In your last days when Hospice was predicting your homegoing -- you would say,

"It's all in God's timing -- when He's ready it will happen."

I miss you terribly Mom -- but this one thing-- I am so glad that you can't see all that is happening in our world today. You were always about helping kids in need at Moro school.  In your last days, you even supported children in Bethany's classes that needed clothes.

I thought a lot during this month of July about the classes you would have for young girls teaching them how to teach Bible Classes.  I taught sewing camp here at home and thought about how much you taught me about sewing and how you would have loved that project.

This past week I got to sew Clara a little dress (from 63 years of sewing I was able to create it without a pattern).

Charlie is eager to use the sewing machine.

You were the master teacher with creating individual learning pads for each of your 2-3 yr olds and 4-5 yr olds in Sunday School.  You taught for 30+ years and created one of the first Mother's Day outs in the late 60's and early 70's.

We're a long line of teachers in our family you - me - Bethany.  I wonder which of the Grands will choose to be an educator.

Each and every day - something that you taught me comes to mind - whether it is - stretching the budget - a sewing tip or a faith lesson.

You taught the boys how to build -- your curiosity was always about learning to create.  "We can make it for less" was always your motto.

Thanks Mom for making us lifelong learners.

The World As I See It Today July 13

THIS IS WHERE I SPEAK MY THOUGHTS AND MY VIEW OF THE WORLD AS I SEE IT.  I DON'T TWEET -- I DON'T POST MY POLITICAL VIEWS ON FB -- THIS IS MY SPACE AND HERE GOES!

I apologize if this is offensive to you . . . it's just where I am at this stage of my life and our world.

I read this post on social media this morning --

"If you watch HGTV too long you'll become dissatisfied with your home -

"If you are on social media too long you'll become dissatisfied with your life -

"If you watch the news too long you'll become dissatisfed with your world."

I guess that is where I am right now.

Watching the daily news, I see --

Sex is misused and abused.

God intended it for a blessing -- to the wife and her husband to enhance their relationship-- and for the procreation of children.

People have used it to exploit, hurt, and destroy.  Child predators are being exposed world-wide.

Our crazy mixed-up world tells children --

They aren't made in the image of God male and female.

They can change and destroy their bodies.

The news reports:

Teachers giving children as young as preschoolers information far beyond their need to know about sex -

They tell them their skin color makes a difference and can mean that they are bad.

Children have no voice -- all the sexual grooming that can happen in their relationships with others and online -- this information robs them of their innocense.

Children are the ones who are hurt when parents are dazed out on drugs.

Young girls are being raped as they come to America across the Southern border.

It's always the children that are hurt - the voiceless victims.

"They" say -- giving up a child for adoption is too traumatic -- what about killing that baby in the womb???

My body -- my choice is blazened on every poster.  What about the choice that comes early on --

whether or not to engage in sex??  Is murder the only form of birth control?

I am FOR taking care of the mother's health.  I understand the case of rape and incest. . . that care needs to happen for these victims. . . what I am talking about is the demand for it.

I've lived 72 years and seen a LOT-

The sexual revolution that hit our country in the late 60's and early 70's -- "Free Love"they called it - flung open the door for the onslaught of sex crimes we have today.  That FREE LOVE wasn't FREE and has brought so much pain and heartache.

All of this and if you are speaking out against any of it you are cancelled - called EXTREME - MYSOGINISTIC - FANATICAL.

God's word reminds us"

"Woe to those who call evil good and good evil" who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.

Isa. 5:30

Please LORD -- heal our land.

If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray, and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and I will forgive their sin and heal their land.

2 Chron 7:14

But in my reading today -- I am reminded that we are called to LOVE --

Love those that are different from us - love those who even cause harm

Love those with strongly differing opinions

Jesus never labeled -- he saw the person and loved them through whatever was blocking their way to Him.
